Top 5 Food Trends for 2008

November 5th, 2008 by ndesigns

1. Eco-Friendly Foods
Increasingly, consumers want to know more about their food like where it was grown, what ingredients it contains, how it was packaged, and the footprint its production left on the earth. Eco-friendly food is food grown, gathered, or harvested near the point of use. By buying eco-friendly food you are supporting the local economy. Small farmers and ranchers are good for your community because their activities keep open space around your community that’s good for ecological diversity and creating fresh air.

2. Concern about Food Safety
No one wants to repeat the scares we had in 2007, when tainted pet food, peanut butter, ground beef, and other products made headlines. Consumers are demanding safe food for us and our pets, and want the government to update the food safety system so we can have confidence that our food supply is safe. So we should concern about The FARM-TO-TABLE INITIATIVE which involves identifying possible contamination points along the farm-to-table continuum and implementing controls for preventing problems that might affect our nation’s food supply
3. Prebiotics and Probiotics
Prebiotics and probiotics can restore the balance of bacteria in your digestive tract. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can be found in various foods. When you eat probiotics, you will add these healthy bacteria to your intestinal tract. Common strains include Lactobacillis and Bifidobacterium families of bacteria. Prebiotics are non-digestible foods that make their way through our digestive system and help good bacteria grow and flourish. Prebiotics keep beneficial bacteria healthy.

4. Whole Grains
Whole grain products include breads, pastas, and cereals that are made with 100% whole grain and not with white processed flours. Whole grains are made from the whole kernels of grain, that is both the inside part of the grain and the outer covering. Processed flours remove the outer covering which gives a lighter texture and taste to baked goods but removes a lot of the nutrition and fiber. Enriched breads have some nutrients returned to the bread, so be sure to read the labels when you are shopping. There are other sources for whole grains besides breads and pastas. Whole grain foods and flours include 100% whole wheat, brown rice, bulger, corn, buckwheat, oatmeal, spelt, and wild rice. The USDA suggests that each of us get at least three servings of whole grains every day.

5. Emphasis on Lowering Salt
Sodium makes the body hold on to fluid. To pump the added fluid, the heart has to work harder. Too much salt can worsen symptoms like swelling and shortness of breath and cause weight gain.

For many people, ingesting too much sodium could lead to high blood pressure – a serious risk factor in heart disease and stroke. Some studies suggest a link between high sodium intake and other diseases, such as stomach cancer and the worsening of asthma. And because sodium increases the excretion of calcium into the urine, it could increase bone loss and the risk of kidney stones.
The American Medical Association has urged food manufacturers to lower the sodium in processed foods. With an aging population and recommendations to lower sodium in our diets, companies are working to keep the same flavor profile and lower the sodium

Fashion Trend for Fall 2008 and Winter 2009

November 5th, 2008 by ndesigns

1. Lumberjack Plaid/ Tartan
You don’t even have to be chopping wood in a forest but you can look cool to dress like a lumberjack. Country chic skipped into many a winter wardrobe this year, with plaids being a major element. A successor to the lumberjack trend that swept through the earlier part of the year, plaid as one of the big Fall/Winter 2008/2009 fashion trends is much more demure.

2. Tapered heels
Heels thatstart thick at the top and taper down, often with a curve, into a stiletto-esque point at the bottom. They’re a sexy, interesting and modern style which can really spice up an outfit. Not as much a classic shape, so buy them if you intend to get a lot of wear out of them over the next few seasons.

3. Military Trend
In 2009 the almighty military jacket can also be played up with a feminine touch. Think Ralph Lauren; a boxy, red military-inspired jacket paired with a floor-length feathered gown. It’s impractical, and it works. Gold detailing and ornate trims set off slick military cuts. In 2009, there are a number of different looks you can create - from rock to edgy-feminine to bohemian. For the ultimate in rock chic, skinny pants or shiny leggings are the perfect accompaniment. Wear with killer heels and a killer attitude.

4. Knitwear
Several knit textures and styles stand out. You can see the look of armor in this spectacular metallic cable knit jumper embedded with sequins. The sweater is from Christopher Kane, and it achieves breathtaking designer mastery. Don’t expect to see many versions yet, but everyday heavy chunky cable knits in grey, black, natural, ink, olive, berry and taupe, abound in the high street autumn collections.

5. Feathers
There’s something about feathers - they conjure up images of graceful swans, of flitting sparrows, of fairytales, and the dream of flight that can only ever be a dream for we wingless creatures. Delicate feather details on dresses, skirts, hats, and collars, seen on the Autumn-Winter runways for 2008-2009. The key to the trend is elegance: no bright pink faux-feather boas, please. Ostrich, peacock, pheasant and marabou are some favorable feathers to look out for.
